Sigurd Fafnesbane

The Ramsund Carving

This language-learning related ancient Norse carving is located close to our offices. It shows Sigurd Fafnesbane slaying the dragon Fafne. When Sigurd tastes Fafne's blood, he suddenly understands new languages, notably the language of the birds. Sigurd's sword was called "Gram" (almost "Grammar"). Sigurd also appears in other cultures and languages. He's the hero of Richard Wagner's German Operas "Siegfried" and "Götterdämmerung". In Spanish he shows up in Jorge Luis Borges "El Aleph". Maybe Sigurd is present in French, Italian or other cultures as well? If you know more about Siegfred in other cultures, we'd be glad to hear from you!
